Can Arizona State bounce back?

The Arizona State Sun Devils were pretty terrible last year, but can they bounce back in 2010?

The Sun Devils finished just 2-7 in the Pac-10, which was barely enough to keep them out of the cellar.

They managed to finish ahead of only the Washington State Cougars in the Pac-10 standings. (Read More…)

Sun Devils share first place in Pac-10 after defeating Cougars

A 6-4 record in the Pac-10 usually signifies a middle-of-the-road team.

In this season’s watered-down version of the conference, however, that record now means a spot in first place.

That’s exactly where the Arizona State Sun Devils find themselves, after defeating the homestanding Washington State Cougars, 81-70. The Sun Devils are now in four-way tie for the top spot, sharing it with California, Arizona, and UCLA.

Ty Abbott led the way for Arizona State, recording team-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds and generally having his way inside. Derek Glasser also had his shot going, hitting all three of his 3-point attempts en route to a 15-point performance.

As a team, Arizona State shot 56 percent from the floor, compared to just 42 percent for Washington State.

As impressively as their 81-point mark on the road was the job the Sun Devils’ defense did on Cougars star Klay Thompson. The sharpshooter scored 20 points, but was a dismal 6 of 20 from the floor, and just 2 of 10 from distance.

Arizona State faces another difficult road test on Saturday, when it travels to Spokane to take on Washington.
